Why is weight training
important?
Both men AND women of all ages will see
great results from a resistance training program. Unfortunately,
most people think that cardio is the only way to lose weight!
Major benefits of strength training include:
- Increased calorie burning (even when not exercising!)
- Increased physical capacity and energy
- Stronger bones
- Enhanced physical appearance
- Improved balance and coordination
Of these benefits, most people are surprised that weight
training actually increases your metabolism and daily calorie
burning. Biologically speaking, muscle is very expensive!
A single pound of lean muscle mass requires 50-60 calories
per day to support itself. Imagine if you added just 5 pounds
of lean muscle mass. You would now burn an extra 300 calories
a day just walking around, eating, and sleeping!
Another key benefit of strength training is increased
bone size and strength. Under the stress of weight
bearing exercises, bones actually become thicker and stronger
over time. This leads to a reduced risk of osteoporosis and
fractures.
Women often worry that weight training will cause
them to "bulk up." This is a fitness myth
that needs to be debunked. Most women lack the amount of testosterone
needed for large increases in muscle size. You may be relieved
to know that female bodybuilders have to work MUCH harder
to put on less mass than their male counterparts -- the difference
is testosterone levels.
Muscle mass is necessary to achieve a nice, toned appearance.

Notice how muscle
reshapes the body more than scale weight.

Both these women
weigh about the same. Notice how muscle tone enhances
the appearance of the woman on the right!
